about

HR-14

The definitive collection for the one and only full length, self titled album. This album was recorded 3 different times, and all 3 passes can now be found here! Each pass has unique identifiers, recording methods and fidelities. Because I feel like it, here's everything I know about each pass, enjoy!

First Pass:

Recorded completely live with no overdubs, with 1 room microphone (maybe a PVi100?) going into an Onkyo tape deck. This is the only pass with vocals, and we pretty much JUST got the songs down enough to play without stopping that day. This is the lowest fidelity, and also the pass I'm least familiar with (I actually forgot about it entirely until I found it again) since we moved on to re-record this fucking thing 2 more times LOL

I like it for historical purposes even though it's probably the worst pass of the three, still has a unique sound and the songs are fun to listen to in their embryonic stages. If I had to guess, this was recorded in September 2015. And I don't think this was mixed or anything, just transferred from tape into Audacity so we could save WAVs. I think I had a Kustom quad jr half stack or whatever at the time, and the vocals came out of a Line 6 with a plethora of nonsense effects applied.

Second Pass:

This one was done with TWO microphones hanging from the ceiling, going into the same Onkyo tape deck. A circular contact mic was hanging above the drums, and the Peavey (or some other black handheld dynamic mic) hung above the guitar amp. I had a Kustom Quad Jr at the time. They both picked up some of the noise and feedback from the second amp that's also present on the first pass. We added a few lead guitar overdubs on this one. I remember we started to overdub vocals, but scrapped them bc we didn't like them, so first pass is the only version of the album with vocals. The songs got developed a little more here, but are still pretty different from the final. We also added Flannel Cardigan. My memory tells me that we did this a few weeks after the first pass.

Third Pass:

The final version was multi-tracked, and is the best sounding, quality wise, but still very lofy. I think we still didn't quite like the second pass, and I decided to make this one a total wall of sound. The drums were recorded first with a DM-70 hanging over Trevor's head. I don't know why, but I'm thankful that just that one mic alone somehow picked up the kick really clearly in comparison to the other passes. I recorded guitar a few days later. I used a Fender Champion 100, no idea what microphone though. Maybe an AKG 120? Most of the songs have left and right rhythm guitars, excessive leads, up to like 6 tracks because I wanted octaves and noise. This pass I remember doing separate tracks for clean and dirty, and just using the built in fender distortion because I wanted a darker/warmer sound since the live recordings were harsh. I used a Big Muff and a Cool Cat Vibe for passes 1 and 2. This final pass would have been done in like, late October/November 2015, and we released it in early December. A week or two later Lovely Weather disbanded.
